At 6:15am on Tuesday morning Jack and I were in the car headed to Churchill Downs for, Dawn at the Downs. We were meeting up with my new girlfriends from Welcoming Hearts, for breakfast and a chance to watch the Oaks and Derby horses workout. Thankful for these new friends that are up for adventure in our new city, even in the wee hours of the morning.
Jack was so excited when I woke him up in the morning, he told me we were going to the "Derby" and that he needed his "horse shirt and stripe pants". Once in the car he told me I was "lookin' pretty" and that we were "going with the pretty mommas to the Derby". Have to love him. If you get him up early in the morning he is happy as long as you are taking him to some place fun.
It was such a gorgeous morning and Jack was a little gentleman on our Mommy/Son date morning. Sure we spend all of our days together, but I think it is important to have special little date outings with your kids as well, one on one. I have awesome memories doing that with my parents and hope to carry on the tradition (hey even as an adult it is still fun)!
Churchill Downs was all set up for the big races, very cool to see without all of the crowds. Breakfast was traditional southern style and very delicious. During the breakfast up in Millionaire's Row (fun to see where the celebs will be Saturday) we got to hear from some of the jockeys and trainers. After breakfast we headed down to the track to watch the horses workout. Megan's husband was there and took Jack right on up to the track, literally. So close he could touch the horses and even feed them peppermints (which he wasn't successful at doing because I think Jack wanted the candy for himself).
It was such a peaceful and tranquil morning watching these gorgeous horses run the track. I could have stayed there all day. They are the most beautiful creatures I have seen and to watch them race on those long skinny legs at such a lightning speed pace is amazing. Jack definitely has a fascination with horses and loves to watch them go "vroom vroom". Wonderful morning with my new girlfriends and my little Jacky Bear! Looking forward to a summer of horse races!
